I
do not have a Facebook account. Everyone tells
me that I should get one but I really don’t want
one. If I need to find someone on Facebook, I
ask someone who has an account and they get it
for me. I am not sure that I understand all of
those social networking sites anyway. A few years
ago someone invited me to get Linkedin, so I did.
Sorry, but that was the biggest waste I have ever
seen. There was nothing there for me. I am a member
of Classmates.com and Twitter because they have
something I want. In the Classmates site, I want
to see how old my classmates have gotten while
I have stayed exactly the same! I keep updating
pictures in there so the girls who refused to
date me in high school can see what a beautiful
wife and family I have. Maybe they will think
of the chance they had to go to the movies with
me when they look over at that pot-bellied goober
napping on the couch!
Twitter is a site I like because it is clean,
concise and gives an inside look at what people
want to share. I think I told you that my Twitter
name is, “FriedPeachPie”! I have some friends
who are Twitter bullies, they send out twenty
Tweets in two hours, pushing everyone else off
the page. I un-follow them pretty quickly. Some
of the folks I follow are Karl Rove, Sean Hannity,
Larry Reesor, Jillian Michaels (Sorry!), a pastor
friend from high school and a few others. Occasionally
someone will embarrass themselves on Twitter.
I had a friend that told something about himself
that just plain embarrassed me. In fact, he did
it more than once so I un-followed him. Forgive
the bluntness, but sometimes people are just plain
stupid.
Since we have spoken the word, let me tell you
something else that is stupid. It is stupid to
see the pictures some people put on their Facebook
pages. Why in this world would you incriminate
your personal life and possible testimony by sharing
pictures that are not appropriate or by “friending”
people who have no standards whatsoever in what
they are willing to post. When I was young in
the ministry there was a principle being espoused
(mostly by Bob Jones University) called, “secondary
separation,” meaning we should not associate with
those who are not appropriately associated. I
never really bought into that but did understand
what they were saying. Some of that discretion
would be appropriate for your Facebook account.
Remember this, potential employers check your
Facebook account. People in your church look at
it. Your mom and dad may be looking or your children!
The best thing to do is remember this powerful
passage from the Word of God. I Thessalonians
5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is
good. 22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. |
