A 40-yard field goal as time expired, gave American Heritage a three point win over NFC in the Class 1A state championship game held at the Citrus Bowl.
It was a dramatic ending to a game where the momentum rocked back and forth all night. NFC (12-2), runner-up for the second consecutive season, came from behind twice and tied the score at 28 on a 72-yard touchdown pass from Clint Trickett to Melvin Ray with 2 minutes, 26 seconds remaining. Trickett, a sophomore, completed 18 of 25 passes for 307 yards and three TDs.
